A first appearance is not a trend. One company filing a phrase takes it from zero to one, and
the percentage change is undefined rather than infinite. Some of these will turn into
something and most will not, and we have no way to tell you which today. The value is in
seeing them early, not in what they predict.
What "first" means here, precisely
First within our tracking window, not first ever. We compare a period against the period
immediately before it, so a phrase that appeared in 2019, went quiet, and has returned will
show here as a first appearance. That is a real signal and it is not the same as a debut, and
the topic page's chart back to 2008 will show you which it is.
